Why can an Etsy PDF be too large?

PDFs can grow surprisingly large when they contain high-resolution artwork, photographs, or scans. Etsy’s file-size limit still applies, but meeting it is only useful if the buyer receives a usable product. This guide explains the difference between rewriting a PDF and rebuilding its pages as images, so you can judge that tradeoff before compressing.

What frustration does this upload fixer solve?

Etsy allows no more than 20 MB for each digital file. This upload fixer rebuilds an oversized PDF at a practical reading resolution and checks the result before download.

What are the rules right now?

20 MB maximum per uploaded digital file. PDF is an accepted Etsy digital-file type.

Requirements last verified September 28, 2026.

What does this upload fixer check—and sometimes change?

This upload fixer checks the PDF’s readability, protection, file size, page count, and Etsy filename rules without sending the document anywhere.

It first re-saves the PDF without deliberately rasterizing pages. If that misses the 19.5 MB target, it rebuilds pages as JPEG images, starting at 150 DPI and stepping down as far as 72 DPI. It checks bytes, not visual quality.

What can’t this upload fixer promise?

Some image-heavy PDFs cannot get under 20 MB without a noticeable loss in quality. Image-based compression may also remove selectable text, links, forms, and other interactive features.

Why might the fixed file still get turned away?

The PDF is password-protected, corrupted, or uses a feature the browser cannot rebuild. The listing already contains five files or another attached file has its own size or filename problem. Etsy rejects the upload because of a session, browser, or connection problem rather than the PDF itself.

What should you do with the new file?

Open the downloaded PDF and check every page at its intended reading or printing size. Test small text, image detail, links, forms, search, and navigation that matter to the product. The result label states whether pages were kept or rasterized and the resolution used. Keep the original as your master file.

When is compression the wrong repair?

A fillable workbook, linked planner, accessible document, or high-resolution print may depend on more than its visible pages. If the first rewrite is not enough, this compressor can replace each page with an image. That can make the file smaller while removing features the buyer paid for. For a multipage product, consider splitting without lowering page-image resolution, then verify document navigation in each part. For a single-page print, re-export from the design application with settings appropriate to the actual print size.

What does the resolution label tell you?

A 150 DPI result means the page images were rendered at 150 dots per inch, not that the tool proved they are crisp enough for your product. Smaller settings can follow if the file still exceeds the target. At a fixed page size, lower resolution leaves fewer pixels for small type and fine line work. A scan that was blurry to begin with does not gain detail. Compare the output at the buyer’s intended scale; a zoomed-out thumbnail can hide damage that is obvious on paper.

What can you learn from the built-in sample?

Choose Try a sample PDF above to create a three-page, 25.9 MB document on your device. It contains deliberately uncompressed color-band images, large and small selectable text, and numbered pages. Run compression, then download the original and result to compare them in your PDF reader. The result label tells you whether pages were preserved or rasterized and at what resolution. A rasterized copy trades selectable text for smaller page images. This synthetic stress case is deliberately inefficient; its reduction is not a prediction for your own planner or artwork.

Why can a PDF still be too large after processing?

The repair targets 19.5 MB to leave headroom below Etsy’s 20 MB limit. An image-heavy document can still exceed that target at the lowest supported resolution, or the browser can run out of memory before finishing. Neither outcome means it is safe to keep reducing quality indefinitely. Try a smaller source export or the splitter when page boundaries permit. Password-protected or damaged files need attention in the original application. The tool does not unlock them or certify that a compressed product is sale-ready.

Does compression preserve selectable text and links?

The upload fixer first tries a lossless rewrite. If that does not make the file small enough, it rebuilds pages as images, which can remove selectable text, links, forms, and other interactive features.

What quality does the upload fixer use?

After the non-rasterizing rewrite, image-based compression begins at 150 DPI and steps down through 135, 120, 96, and 72 DPI only while the file misses the tool’s 19.5 MB target. The result identifies the resolution; you decide whether it is usable.

Would splitting preserve more quality?

Usually, yes. If the PDF has several pages and can fit within Etsy’s five-file allowance, the splitter keeps the original page content instead of rasterizing it.
