Why does Discord reject images and GIFs?

An image or GIF can look perfectly innocent and still be too much for Discord to accept. File size, dimensions, format, and animation can all make a difference. This upload fixer checks what Discord cares about and reduces the file only as much as needed.

What frustration does this upload fixer solve?

Discord rejects images and GIFs that are too large for your account. This upload fixer checks the file on your device and makes it smaller while keeping as much quality as practical.

What are the rules right now?

Non-Nitro uploads: up to 20 MB, checked before Discord compression. Nitro Basic: up to 50 MB. Nitro: up to 500 MB. Discord lists JPEG among its common accepted attachment types.

Requirements last verified September 28, 2026.

What does this upload fixer check—and sometimes change?

This upload fixer checks the source file type, size, dimensions, and whether a GIF is animated—all on your device. Discord checks size before compression on desktop and mobile.

It reduces quality or dimensions toward a 19.5 MB target. PNG, JPEG, and WebP stills retain those formats; detected animated GIFs stay GIFs. A single-frame GIF may become a JPEG, and animated WebP is not preserved as animation.

What can’t this upload fixer promise?

Some very large or detailed GIFs may be too much for a browser to repair. The upload fixer also cannot repair a damaged file or a format your browser cannot read.

Why might the fixed file still get turned away?

A Discord safety scan blocks the image even though its file size is acceptable. The channel does not allow attachments, or the network fails while the file is being sent. The image is corrupted or uses features that the current browser cannot decode.

What should you do with the new file?

Open the downloaded copy and check fine text, transparent edges, color gradients, and the complete animation. Compare it with the original before posting. The displayed file size is a size result, not a guarantee of unchanged appearance or Discord acceptance.

Should you reduce a still image or an animation?

A still image and an animated GIF spend bytes differently. For a JPEG or WebP still, the upload fixer first adjusts quality and can then reduce dimensions. For PNG it reduces dimensions without converting it to JPEG. An animated GIF needs a sequence of frames, so the repair can reduce frame rate, palette size, and dimensions together. Decide whether fine detail or smooth motion matters most before accepting the download. Keep a higher-quality original for uses other than Discord.

What would happen to a 24 MB animated GIF?

A readable 24 MB animated GIF exceeds the documented free allowance. This upload fixer attempts a GIF below its 19.5 MB target, leaving headroom below Discord’s 20 MB rule. That is a hypothetical input example, not a measured reduction or a promise that every GIF can fit. Watch for banding in gradients, missing brief expressions, and jagged outlines. An output that passes the byte check may still be a worse way to share that particular animation.

Which animation details can change?

Detected animated GIFs remain animated, but their frame timing, colors, dimensions, and loop behavior need not match the source. The GIF encoder makes the output loop continuously. Single-frame GIFs use the still-image path and can become JPEGs; animated WebP can become a still image. If transparency, a one-time loop, or precise timing is essential, inspect the result carefully or prepare a smaller version in the original animation editor. This is not an archival conversion.

Why might a smaller image still not preview?

Uploading an attachment and displaying it inline are different outcomes. Discord says images above 20 MB may appear as downloads instead of previews, even for accounts with a larger allowance. This image upload fixer uses the free-size target and has no plan selector. It cannot change safety-scan decisions or channel permissions. Animated GIF repair rejects inputs above 250 MB, and complex animations may exceed available browser memory. Export fewer frames or smaller dimensions in the source app if local repair cannot finish.

Will a GIF stay animated?

Detected animated GIFs are re-encoded as GIFs, but frame rate, colors, dimensions, and looping can change. Brief motion can disappear when frames are resampled, so preview the result. Single-frame GIFs may become JPEGs.

Will a PNG become a JPEG?

No. PNG stills remain PNGs; JPEG and WebP stills also retain their formats. Do not assume this means every detail or all animation features are preserved.

Why did Discord still block the repaired image?

A smaller file cannot solve channel permissions, connection failures, or Discord safety scanning. Those checks happen only when you upload to Discord.
